Howard Pyle (1853 — 1911) was an American author an illustrator, who is well known for his illustrations of pirates and is acknowledged as being responsible for the typical stereotypical pirate ‘look’.
Pyle’s also produced artwork to accompany the short stories of many famous authors including Mary E. Wilkins Freeman’s ghost story “The Little Maid at the Door“.
