The Turn of the Screw by Henry James

The Turn of the Screw is a classic horror novella written by Henry James. It first appeared in serial format in Collier’s Weekly (January 27 to April 16, 1898). It was later published in book form, is very popular to this day, remains on of Jame’s most successful works of dark fiction, and has been adapted for the screen and stage on numerous occasions. At the time of writing (October 2024), one of the most recent adaptation was In a Dark Place (2006), a film that differs from previous adaptions because it has a modern-day setting. More recent still The Turning (2020) sticks with the traditional Victorian setting.

Although many people consider The Turn of the Screw to be a ghost story, some critics have suggested the ghosts in the story are figments of the central character’s imagination.

Henry James was an American-British author who is considered by many to be one of the greatest English novelists.

A prolific author, James also wrote more than 100 short stories and novellas, along with books about travel, plays, essays, and works of literary criticism.
