The Gypsy’s Curse (A Story from The Hermit’s Cave)
“The Gypsy’s Curse” is one of the poorer offerings from The Hermit’s Cave, but it’s mildly entertaining. It’s the story of Clara Johnson, her husband Peter, and Clara’s old mother, Marie. Peter is a butcher; although the family live a humble life, they live quite well.
Clara is a big strong woman who is more than happy to work at the shop alongside her husband. There is a problem in the area where they live though. Gipsies are believed to be stealing livestock from the local farms. The strange thing is that they only take the pigs. There is now a shortage of pigs for Peter to buy and when Farmer Grantmeyer refuses to sell his prize pigs to the butcher Clara remains strangely confident that he will sell to them sooner or later.
Peter knows from past experience that Clara is usually right about these sorts of things and he tells her what a good wife she is and that as far he is concerned there is not a finer woman in the town than Clara Johnson. Marie, on the other hand, appears to have a very different opinion of her daughter. There is something strange about Clara and there is a reason why she is so confident about getting Grantmeyer’s pigs.
