The Windsor Magazine

The Windsor Magazine (December 1916)

The Windsor Magazine was an illustrated general interest magazine published by Ward, Lock, and Bowden (later Ward, Lock and Co.). It ran for 537 issues between January 1895 and September 1939 and was aimed at both sexes.

Early issues of the magazine bore the title and a sketch of Windsor Castle. Issues distributed after June 1917 had a different cover picture each month.

The Windsor Magazine featured articles by famous athletes and celebrities. Even Wyatt Earp was a contributor. It also contained fiction by many famous and up-and-coming Victorian authors including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling, E. Nesbit, and E. F. Benson. Several of the authors who contributed to the magazine wrote ghost stories and similar dark tales, some of which are available in the Public Domain Stories section of this site.
